What I Played in August 2024

Posted on 2024.09.05

August has ended so it’s time for another month-in-review! Wait… what do you mean August is already finished? Why must the passage of time be so cruel… Anyway with a new college semester starting, I’ve had a bit less time to play games compared to the summer. I love video games so much and I wish I had more time to play them. But regardless, here are the games I played in August 2024 in no particular order.

Splatoon 3

A Splatoon fan playing Splatoon? What a surprise… Or wait, it actually is a bit of a surprise. I’ve been a bit burned out on the game for a while but I played it for the Splatfest that happened this month and the Salmon Run golden rotation (which btw, I reached EVP400 on Gone Fission Hydroplant for the first time!). I’ve played it very little outside of that, but with the Grand Festival coming up, I hope that changes! But whatever, regardless of how much I play the game, I will still continue loving Splatoon as a whole.

Tetris 99

It’s been like 8 months since I last played it, but Nintendo dropped a Splatoon 3 Side Order theme, and as the Splatoon-obsessed guy I am, I HAD to get it. I’m good at Tetris so instead of only playing to get the theme, I wanted to aim for first. So with only one warm up game before the event started, I managed to get 1st place in my fourth attempt. I’m just crazy like that B). I forgot how good this game was, and kinda regret not playing for the Super Mario Bros. Wonder event. Hopefully they put it in the shop sometime (it’s been a while since they last put event themes in the shop, I wonder why).

Tetris Effect: Connected

So with the Tetris 99 event and Tetris Forever being announced in that Partner Direct, I’ve returned to this game a couple times this month. No special notes here. It’s just Tetris. It’s good, it’s fun, it’s Tetris. I love Tetris.

Clone Hero

I played more Clone Hero. Nothing special here either, it’s just a good game that I play when I feel like it.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

I got another physical GameCube game! This has been on my wishlist since the day I got the console and it feels so good to finally have a copy in my hands. I know a decent bit about Melee due to the sheer amount of videos I’ve watched, especially about the competitive scene, so it’s been really exciting to play it for the first time (not like I’m gonna play it seriously though, I’m very much a casual player). It’s a lot of fun! I’ve only been playing it solo, which is a bit of a different experience from multiplayer, but that’s fine. I played it with friends exactly once and it was an absolute blast, so I hope I get to play it like that more often. I’ve been mainly playing with Jigglypuff; I miss 9 out of 10 rests but the one time it hits makes it all worth it.

Mario Party 6

So I finally got to play this game with friends and Oh. My. God. It’s peak, it’s so beautiful. We played on the map Snowflake Lake (which might be my favorite MP6 map tbh). The gimmick of this board is one of the best and I desperately want to see it on a new Mario Party. On the topic of that game, SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE PLEASE BE GOOD 🙏🙏🙏

GoldenEye 007

This game is very interesting, especially given its historical context. Like most old games that were trying to do something new, the awkward controls are a big barrier to entry. It took me a long time to get used to them; I found the most success with the 1.3 Kissy control scheme. Anyway, this game is fun! I love blasting away at enemies, and I adore the variety of missions which keeps things fresh. Unfortunately for me, the fun stopped once I reached the level “Control”. I found it way too frustrating compared to previous levels, and after over an hour of futile attempts, I gave up. It’s not fun to spend 3-5 minutes redoing the same thing you’ve done already, only for Natalya to die within seconds of starting the hacking process. Maybe one day I’ll return and retry, but for now I’m done with this game sadly.

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$

I don’t have much to say about this game. It’s WarioWare, it’s great. Lotta fun! The fact that newer games in the series don’t stray far from this game’s formula proves how much it got right the first try.
