What I Played in July 2024

Posted on 2024.08.01

Hello and welcome to my first month-in-review post! In an effort to make more posts to this blog (and shorter ones at that lol), I’ve decided to make a monthly post briefly talking about the games I played over the past month. So here are the games I played in July of 2024, in no particular order.

Clone Hero

I’ve been watching Guitar Hero/Clone Hero videos since 2019, and I’ve always wanted to try it. Several years later, I finally got my wish. I bought an adapter to use our old guitar controller on my PC (dad used to play GH3 on the Wii back in the day), and I also have an electronic drum kit that works with the game. After playing it, it is just as magical as I thought it was. I’ve been having an absolute blast playing tons of songs on both guitar and drums. It’s been two months since I started playing and I haven’t stopped since. I see this being one of those forever games that you still return to every now and then, even years down the line. So yeah, this is probably my most played game this month.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

I’ve always been interested in the Ace Attorney series, it looked cool from a distance. I had bought the six mainline games on the 3DS eShop the day before it shut down, but it wasn’t until now that I finally started playing them. Obviously I started with this first game, and I liked it! I had watched a YouTube let’s play of this, so I already knew all the major story beats, but I still had fun refreshing my memory and solving the mysteries I didn’t remember. Also I didn’t remember anything about that last case, so I was able to play it blind like intended! Can’t wait to try out the other games.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Justice For All

What do you do when you finish the first game in a series? You play the sequel! And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. Unsurprisingly, I’ve also been enjoying this game. I think the new psyche-locks mechanic is interesting, though it can be frustrating at times. And I find it kinda funny how the “health bar” is the same as the one used during court sessions and they carry over between the two. The first two cases were great, but the circus case kinda sucked. Let’s see how this 4th case ends up.

Splatoon 3

I’m still pretty burnt out on this game, but I had to return from my hiatus to participate in the Summer Nights splatfest. All things considered, I’m surprised I didn’t have an absolutely miserable time with it (only a little bit ;3). Was kinda cool to return; I miss the game but also I’ve been enjoying my time with other games so idk when to fully return. I also got to take a billion pictures of Marie in her summer outfit so that’s a huge plus :3

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

When I first played it, I did so for 2 hours then stopped for no reason. Last month I decided to give this game another go, and continued playing it through early this month. I haven’t finished it yet though, cuz to be honest, the game is kinda boring me. The main levels are great (starting from world 3 at least) and I wish there were more of them. Instead, the game is padded with these treasure road levels (which I have to do if I want to upgrade my copy abilities) and I couldn’t care less about them. Hopefully I find the strength to continue and beat this game soon.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I’ve played this game multiple times but never finished it. Last month I decided to start a new file for like the 4th or 5th time, but this time determined to beat it. And I did! It was a magnificent game. The overworlds are really fun to explore and are full of satisfying secrets, and the dungeons are cleverly designed (Turtle Rock can suck it though). A classic that has barely aged; I understand now why people regard it so highly.

Nintendo Switch Online – Expansion Pack sampler

Since I recently purchased the Expansion Pack, I’ve been trying out a lot of games just briefly. Here are some I played:

  • Metroid: Zero Mission - After revisiting and beating Metroid Prime Remastered (which I had done due to Prime 4 hype), I needed more Metroid so I decided to play this one. ‘Twas good fun. Oh how I missed playing 2D Metroids…
  • Metroid: Fusion - After beating Zero Mission, I started playing this one. I’ve only played like 1 or 2 hours of it… I need to find the time for this.
  • Star Fox 64 - A pretty alright arcade style game. This my first time playing (and finishing) a Star Fox game too. Aiming can be a bit difficult and finicky, but other than that it was a decent time. Maybe I’ll replay this one in the future, to experience different paths.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - the original N64 version runs like crap and looks not-the-best, but I might play it till the end anyway. I played the 3DS version as a kid and I have so much nostalgia for it, it was one of the first games I ever beat after all. So playing this version is sort of cool in a “this is what it was like” kinda way. Plus I get bragging rights for saying I beat the original version (no I don’t) (literally no one cares) (+ L + ratio)
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - I played this for an hour. Yup, that’s it. I need to continue playing this game.
  • Pokémon Stadium - this sure is a Pokémon stadium. Idk what to say honestly, I played for an hour.
  • Mario Party 3 - I tried the singleplayer story mode. It, uhhh… sure is something. Man, I need to get some friends to play this with or something.

Peggle Deluxe

I saw a gameplay video of Peggle and felt compelled to boot up this game. So I did, and played for about an hour. That’s it. Btw you should try this game if you haven’t.

Mario Party 7

I bought another physical GameCube game! I know emulation exists but there’s something novel and cool about playing games on original hardware, which is why I wanna collect at least some multiplayer party games to play with friends in person. Anyway, I played a single round of Mario Party alone and yup, it sure was Mario Party.

Small note before I leave: I know the What I’ve Played page is outdated, and it will likely stay that way for a little while. I’m in the process of creating a new page for it, which involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work. Once the new page is out, it’s gonna be way easier for me to regularly update the list, as it’s supposed to. Please be patient with me! ;w;
